Abstract. Since the discovery of the two cannabinoid receptors, CB 1 and CB 2 , several molecules, commonly defined as endocannabinoids, able to bind to and functionally activate these receptors, have been discovered and characterized.

Anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) are the two best studied endogenous lipids which can act as endocannabinoids. Together with the proteins responsible for their biosynthesis, inactivation and the cannabinoid receptors, these lipids constitute the endocannabinoid system.
